NFL Free Agency: Would Cleveland Welcome Back Braylon Edwards?

With NFL Free Agency in full swing, rumors are surfacing all over the country about the intentions of NFL franchises and players. Braylon Edwards has been a hot topic of discussion now that the New York Jets have re-signed Santonio Holmes to a long term deal.

Edwards is likely the hottest commodity left in the free agent market and the Cleveland Browns are actively looking for a wide receiver. However, Edwards and the Browns had a very ugly fallout two years ago as nasty remarks from the organization and constant heckling from the fan base caused the former Michigan Wolverine to skip town for New York.

Now that Cleveland is under new management, one would have to wonder if Edwards would be willing to return to Cleveland. One would also wonder if the Browns fans would welcome him back.

One of the biggest knocks against Edwards during his time with the Browns was his “lack of effort” and his tendency to drop passes. Edwards’ catching ability has not improved over his time with New York but he is still one of the most productive Browns receivers since the teams’ return in 1999.

Throughout his career with the Browns, Edwards caught 28 touchdown passes and surpassed the 1,000 receiving mark on 1 occasion.

Tom Heckert was kind enough to sit down with the media on Tuesday as the Browns continued to fight through the craziness that is NFL Free Agency. Heckert made some strong points concerning the state of the Browns franchise. However, he seemed quite secretive on the topic of Terrelle Pryor.

Pryor is looking to enter the NFL’s supplemental draft later this fall as his final year of college eligibility became scarred by NCAA violations. When asked about Cleveland’s interest in Pryor, both Tom Heckert and Pat Shurmur stated that their “hasn’t been a final decision made as of yet”.

That statement leads Browns fans to believe that Cleveland is thinking about making a run at Pryor later this fall. The Browns currently have Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace listed as the top two quarterbacks on their depth chart.

2010 starting quarterback, Jake Delhomme, will be released later this week.

The Cleveland Browns announced on Tuesday afternoon that they will part ways with veteran quarterback, Jake Delhomme, later this week. Delhomme was signed by the Browns last season to serve as a mentor to Colt McCoy start for the team while they continued through the Eric Mangini era.

Delhomme played terribly as a starter for the Browns last season as he threw seven interceptions and two touchdowns. However, most of his poor play could be attributed to an ankle injury that he suffered in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Browns will enter training camp on Friday with four quarterbacks on the roster. Colt McCoy, Seneca Wallace, Jarrett Brown, and Troy Weatherhead will each be taking snaps during the preseason and looking towards securing a roster spot at the end of August. Brown and Weatherhead will likely be fighting for the third quarterback slot on the depth chart as McCoy is expected to be the starter for the 2011-12 season.
