NFL Draft 2011: Cleveland Browns Targeting Da’Quan Bowers In Second Round

The Cleveland Browns are entering the second day of the draft with defense on the mind as former Clemson star Da’Quan Bowers sits at the top of the draft board for the best players available. Bowers has slipped out of the first round due to injury concerns with his knee that forced him to miss time during his final season at Clemson.

Cleveland has already improved the defensive line with the addition of Phil Taylor in the first round but still lacks the pass-rushing presence that has plagued the team for the last several seasons. Bowers made his living during the college game as a pass-rushing defensive end and put up great numbers in the Tigers system.

Bowers’ career stats include 150 tackles, one forced fumble and one interception in three seasons with Clemson.

Cleveland would improve the defensive line greatly with the addition of Bowers due to the fact that the Browns do not have a true defensive end on the current roster. Matt Roth was the most productive defensive end in 2010. However, Roth is currently up for free agency and has not seemed too interested in returning to Cleveland next season.

The Cleveland Browns entered the 2011 NFL Draft looking to improve the defensive line and the wide receiver position. Phil Taylor may have solidified one of those spots as the former nose tackle from Baylor University will now take his talents to the shores of Lake Erie in 2011 and hope to help the Browns compete with some of the strong rushing attacks in the AFC North.

Taylor was acquired by the Browns after two significant trades in the first round that helped Cleveland land five draft picks from the Atlanta Falcons. Cleveland traded their first round selection (sixth overall) to Atlanta in exchange for the Falcons’ first round selection, second round selection, fourth round selection and a first and fourth round selection in 2012.

ESPN and WKYC Cleveland reported earlier this week that Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy has arranged a private workout session with his receivers set to take place this weekend. According to the report, Cleveland’s receivers have converged on Austin, Texas in order to meet with the second-year signal caller and get framiliar with the new offensive playbook that has become infamous over the past several weeks.

Josh Cribbs, Mohamed Massaquoi, Carlton Mitchell and Jordan Norwood are all said to be in Texas with McCoy in addition to other Browns players that have not announced their intentions on-line.

Cleveland’s front office has been informed of McCoy’s actions through the media and are pleased that the young man is taking control of his offense. The Browns players are not permitted to enter any team facility or have coaches present at any of the players’ workouts until all of the labor negotiations have officially been completed.
