The Cleveland Browns continued to posture the team for training camps and this afternoon dumped 8 players. DB’s John Bowie, Benjamin Burney and Ramzee Robinson joined RB Thomas Brown, OL Jason Capizzi, LB Auston English, and WR James Robinson who were all cut.

The biggest name on the cut list was a recent Browns acquisition, K Shaun Suisham. Suisham was brought in as Browns veteran K Phil Dawson decided he was going to sit out during voluntary club workouts.

Dawson has kicked for the Browns since their re-entry to the league. He only missed 2 field goals last season but only had 19 FG attempts. Dawson, 35, wants a long term contract, but the veteran has a year remaining on his contract and is 51 of 74 attempts from 40-49 yard attempts in his career with the Browns. Dawson has skipped all voluntary participation and now his joining the team at the recent mini-camp allows him to go forward without facing a fine.

I do not blame the Browns management for not offering Dawson a long term contract as he will be 36 at the conclusion of the NFL year.

Browns Face Mandatory Camp Holdouts

The Cleveland Browns have had several players skip voluntary workouts this off season, and now it appears some players might be skipping mandatory workouts as well. Browns S Abe Elam has missed all the Browns OTA’s and has yet to sign his tender offer. Elam has stated on his website that he was weighing his options but the Browns don’t appear to offer any restricted free agents any sort of long term deals at this time. Cleveland could certainly use his veteran presence in the secondary in 2010.

Joining Elam are D’Qwell Jackson and Matt Roth are both not attending mandatory camp either.

One player who has been absent for many voluntary workouts, RB Jerome Harrison said he will attend the mandatory camp this coming weekend.

Browns veteran kicker Phil Dawson remains undecided on his intentions.

One half of the Philadelphia Eagle’s fans were jumping for joy when Donovan McNabb was traded this offseason, but one half would most likely see Eagles head coach Andy Reid run out of town too. Would his next stop be Cleveland?

The Cleveland Browns signed a wide receiver yesterday, but most likely no one you’ve heard of. The Browns signed James Robinson who is 6’3″ 220 pounds and has spent time playing in the Arena league as well as Canada.

[picappgallerysingle id="3288277"]Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren says he absolutely will revive the Browns. This is a very good read on the Browns from USA Today.

Some news and notes from the Browns OTA’s along with a very good video of Colt McCoy’s progress during the first month of camp.

Paul Warfield has retired as the Browns senior advisor to the general manager.

It appears that the Browns might be starting three rookies in the secondary for 2010. That will allow for some bumps and bruises but it’s the only way these players will get the experience they need to develop.
